3D Mammograms

According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year relative survival rate for women with stage 0 or stage 1 breast cancer is 99 percent. This is why ELFP follows the ACS’s recommendation that all women over 40 years of age have a mammogram performed annually. And, it’s why we offer the latest, most advanced imaging technology at the lowest cost possible.

Our state-of-the-art Pink Ribbon Imaging Center houses two of the state’s Genius 3D Mammography machines. This technology is proven to detect more invasive breast cancers and decrease inaccurate reports and false alarms of normal results. This means that it often reduces the number of unnecessary biopsies for patients and provides clearer results for radiologists to analyze. What are the benefits of a 3D mammogram?
Traditional mammograms provide a two-dimensional image of the three-dimensional breast. Overlapping layers of tissue can sometimes create unclear results, false alarms, or worse – missed cancer cells. A 3D mammogram provides a series of detailed images of the breast, allowing doctors to better evaluate breast tissue. Because of it’s clinically-proven increase in accuracy, a 3D exam can help reduce false-positive callbacks for additional imaging.

Who can have a 3D mammogram?
This exam is approved for all women who would undergo a standard mammogram.

How do I prepare?
Women should consider scheduling a mammogram one week after their period ended. A bare torso is required for the test, so wearing comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing is recommended. Avoid applying perfume, deodorant, or lotion before your test.

What to expect during your exam:
A 3D mammogram is very similar to a conventional 2D exam. The technologist will position you, compress your breast under a paddle and take images from different angles. There is no additional compression required with a 3D mammogram, and it only takes a few seconds for each view. During the exam, the X-Ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images in just seconds.

We must obtain prior mammogram films on any patient who has not received imaging in our mammography department. Proper readings cannot be completed without them.
